Information Management Workshop Program

2018 ILTER IM Workshop

Facing the Future: Developing Science-based Information Management with New Technology

Time: 1:00 – 5:00 pm, October 14, 2018

Location: Lin Hotel, Taichung

Topic 1: Introduction to Information Management at ILTER: Past, Present, and Future

Time: 1:00 -1:40 PM

Speakers:

Chau-Chin Lin (Taiwan Forestry Research Institute)

John Porter (University of Virginia)

Format: Lecture

Introduction: Dr. Chau-Chin Lin is the former chair of the Information Management Committee at the International Long-Term Ecological Research Network East Asia Pacific Region. Dr. Lin has extensive experiences in data management. Especially, he has organized many workshops to train data managers from ILTER sites worldwide in the past two decades. He has been an active member of the IM team at ILTER. In this talk, he will review the history of information management at ILTER and discuss challenges of ILTER in the future. Especially, he will discuss how information management may change with the recent advances in new technology, including soundscape and UAS / drone technology.

Topic 2:  Asian Soundscape Monitoring Network

Time: 1:40 - 3:00 PM

Speakers:

Yu-Huang Wang (Taiwan Academy of Ecology)

Sheng-Shan Lu (Taiwan Forestry Research Institute)

Format: Lecture and Brief demo

Introduction: recent advances in capturing and analyzing soundscape data have empowered monitoring soundscape as an essential tool for studying changes in environment and biodiversity. However, it will continuously generate a huge amount of acoustic data in a long-term monitoring project and it will not be possible to scale out the monitoring network if there is no sound data management plan with the stable support of information-communication technology. In this mini-workshop, we will introduce the project of extending Asian Soundscape Monitoring Network supported by the European Commission’s Asi@Connect project and demonstrate how the soundscape data were managed and shared on an open platform based on the GRID distributed computing and storage infrastructure.

Topic 3:  UAS Ecological Observation Network

Time: 3:00 – 4:00 PM

Speakers:

Yu-Huang Wang (Taiwan Academy of Ecology)

Sheng-Shan Lu (Taiwan Forestry Research Institute)

Format: Lecture and Brief demo

Introduction: recent advances in UAS / drone technology and data processing for aerial images of structure from motion enable the applications of consumer drones in high-resolution ecological and environmental observation. It is possible to establish an open UAS observation network by organizing training workshops on operating consumer drones, using flight planning and photogrammetry apps, as well as sharing data on the web. In this mini-workshop, we will demonstrate how to share drone-mapping data (orthomosaic and 3D model) to the web using open or free platforms (OpenAerialMap, Sketchfab, and Melown Cloud). For efficiently managing and sharing the data from an UAS ecological observation network, we propose to collaboratively develop an open platform based on the GRID distributed computing and storage infrastructure by deploying Web OpenDroneMap (WebODM) for processing aerial images and sharing the processed data as well as using Metacat (or CKAN) for documenting comprehensive project metadata.

Topic 4: General discussion
